Historian talks new street scenes book
Highland Park: The L.A. Times talks to Highland Park resident and historian Nathan Marsak about his reissue of Arnold Hylen’s photo book, “Los Angeles Before the Freeways: Images of An Era 1850-1950." Hylen, a professional photographer from Sweden, published this book of black-and-white street scenes in 1981. Marsak has expanded it with more of Hylen’s photos, plus more text, notes, and captions. “There’s a saying that when something’s gone, it’s gone for good,” Marsak said, “and 98% of the stuff in this book is gone.”
