Years in the making, Welland’s Central Fire Station museum officially opened its doors Saturday.
Opened in 1920 and built in an Edwardian classical style, the building at Hellems Avenue and Division Street last served as an operational fire hall in 2006. It is now operated by the volunteer-led Central Station Education Initiative (CSEI).
CSEI was incorporated in 2017, an outgrowth of many organizations and committees working over the last three decades to find a way to save and transform Central Fire Station into a public heritage building.
“Central Fire Hall is one of only three significant major heritage structures surviving in downtown Welland,” says the CSEI’s website.
The project has received support from different levels of government and individual donors and groups.
