National Guard troops arrived in downtown Los Angeles Sunday after President Donald Trump ordered their deployment in response to two days of occasionally violent protests over federal immigration raids.

Over strenuous objection from local Democratic officials, troops arrived at downtown’s Federal Building around 4 a.m. Sunday. It was unclear how many were in the contingent, but Trump’s order called for 2,000.

“National Guard has been deployed to federal facilities,” the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division said Sunday morning. “Everyone has the right to peacefully assemble and voice their opinions. However, vandalizing property and attempting to seriously injure officers, whether federal or LAPD, is not peaceful.
