Timmins’ own underwater rugby team punched above its weight at a tournament they hosted against much more experienced teams from Toronto and Montreal.

“The Timmins Northern Seals did great, we came in third place but we got a lot of goals and we defended very well,” said Alex Gervais, the team’s coach, following the all-day event in the deep end at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex Pool on Saturday, June 7.

“We were up against some very strong teams. We were playing against the Toronto Raccoons, a well-established team that has been playing for 25 years,” he said, adding the Montreal CAMOs came in first place.

Pretty impressive for a team where half of the 14 players had never played in a tournament before.
