A Sudbury couple whose baby girl was born with a heart defect is grateful for donations that are coming in to help with their travel and medical costs.

Emmersynn arrived eight weeks early on Feb. 4, weighing less than five pounds. A couple of months prior to her birth, parents Rebeccah Machum and Austin Powell had learned through a medical team at Mount Sinai Hospital that the child would need special treatment upon birth and surgery a few months later.

“She has been in hospital since the day she was born,” the parents said at a GoFundMe page for the family. “First she was in the care of the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) at HSN. Due to her pre-existing heart defect, she was flown to Sick Kids in Toronto on Feb. 17.”
