Former Vanderbilt men’s golf All-American Gordon Sargent failed to make the cut in his professional PGA Tour debut over the weekend.
But he did finish 10 strokes ahead of one of the biggest names in golf.
Sargent posted a two-day total of 139 at the Canadian Open in Ontario, good for one-under par through 36 holes. He missed the three-under-par cut by two strokes, joining four other former Vandy golfers — Brandt Snedeker (-3), Luke List (-2), Will Gordon (E) and Matthew Riedel (E) — in failing to advance to the third round of the tournament.
All finished well ahead of five-time major championship winner Rory McIlroy, who carded a two-day total of 149 (+9) just two months after claiming his first Masters title.
All in all, it wasn’t a bad first tournament as a pro for Sargent, especiall
