Gavin Newsom, the California governor, has dared Donald Trump’s border tsar to arrest him as the violent unrest engulfing Los Angeles looked set to continue into a fourth day.

The Democrat governor goaded Tom Homan to make good on his threat to arrest him, as he blamed Mr Trump’s administration for inflaming the protests sparked by immigration raids in the city .

Masked protesters in Los Angeles smashed and torched self-driving electric cars during a third day of volatile demonstrations on Sunday.

“Come and arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy. I don’t give a damn,” Mr Newsom told MSNBC after Mr Homan had threatened both Mr Newsom and Karen Bass, the LA mayor.

“He’s a tough guy. Why doesn’t he do that? He knows where to find me,” Mr Newsom added.
