Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) escalated his longstanding public feud with President Donald Trump on Monday afternoon over Trump's decision to send federal troops to the state amid ongoing protests in Los Angeles.

Protesters have swarmed in Los Angeles in response to a series of federal immigration enforcement actions, specifically large-scale raids from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that resulted in the arrest of more than 100 immigrants last week.

The protests intensified following the arrest of David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union, or SEIU, of California, during a Friday demonstration.

Many of the protesters have opposed the deployment of the National Guard, which Trump ordered over the weekend despite opposition from Newsom.

On Monday afternoon, Newsom took a shot at the president on social media after Trump doubled down on his threats against protesters.

"'If they spit, we will hit.' This is a statement from the President of the United States concerning the catastrophic Gavin Newscum inspired Riots going on in Los Angeles," wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform. "The Insurrectionists have a tendency to spit in the face of the National Guardsmen/women, and others. These Patriots are told to accept this, it’s just the way life runs. But not in the Trump Administration. IF THEY SPIT, WE WILL HIT, and I promise you they will be hit harder than they have ever been hit before."

In response, Newsom attacked the president and attached photos of dozens of troops appearing to sleep on the ground in an industrial area.

"You sent your troops here without fuel, food, water or a place to sleep," wrote Newsom. "Here they are — being forced to sleep on the floor, piled on top of one another. If anyone is treating our troops disrespectfully, it is you @realDonaldTrump."
