NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the death of former New Madrid County Sheriff Bud Cooper.

Cooper spent nearly 30 years with the highway patrol; now, its Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Cooper died at his home in New Madrid on May 26.

Sergeant Brad Germann with the highway patrol said the New Madrid County sheriff requested the investigation within 24 hours of Cooper’s passing.

Germann said the DDCC investigation is active and ongoing, and what happens next depends on the results.

Cooper himself supervised the DDCC unit of Troop E during his time with the highway patrol.

He served as New Madrid County sheriff from August 2020 until June 2024, when he stepped down for health
