MICHIGAN (WNEM) – New bipartisan legislation is being introduced to protect 24/7 forecasting with the National Weather Service (NWS).

The Federal Operational Resilience in Emergency Conditions and Storm Tracking, or FORECAST Act, introduced by U.S. Senator Gary Peters and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, would keep NWS positions critical to alerting the public of extreme weather events exempt from executive orders placing a hiring freeze.

In Marquette, Peters said the Trump administration cut the forecasting office so short that it may need to suspend overnight staffing in the next few weeks.
