Doechi has been named Best Female Hip Hop artist at the 2025 BET Awards.

She used the occasion to deliver a powerful speech acknowledging the protests going on in Los Angeles.

"As much as I am honoured by this award, I do want to address what's happening right now outside of the building," she said.

"There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order."

The Awards, which honour excellence among Black entertainers, were handed out Monday night in downtown LA, despite rumours they might not go ahead due to protests in the area.

Doechii continued, "Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want you all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?"

President Trump has deployed National Guard troops to LA amid the protests against the immigration raids taking place. On Sunday, close to where the BET Awards were being celebrated, demonstrators shut down the 101 freeway to express their discontent over Trump's policies.

"People are being swept up and torn from their families, and I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people," Doechii added.
