PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Federal agents arrested a 24-year-old asylum seeker last week because it placed her on what’s called “expedited removal,” which is a faster deportation process, according to court filings filed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE agents arrested the woman living in Vancouver immediately after a Portland court hearing for her asylum claim.

The attorneys for the woman from Mexico said ICE arrested her “deceptively” and that she should be released from the ICE facility in Tacoma.

The woman’s attorneys argue ICE is using the “expedited removal” provision too broadly.

ICE, however, says Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem can change the standard for that expedited process as she pleases.
