A group of Oakland City Council members on Tuesday announced budget amendments that they said would prevent nearly all fire station closures and reverse employee layoffs in the face of a deficit running into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The four first-term councilmembers, led by Budget Committee co-chairs Janani Ramachandran and Rowena Brown, said their changes to the city’s next two-year budget plan focus on the essentials that Oaklanders want and efforts to prepare the city for uncertain federal support.
