A Jefferson Parish grand jury handed up an indictment charging a Marrero man with killing his brother's stepson after an argument between family members turned physical, according to authorities.

Scott Fredericks, 58, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Joshua Carter, court records show. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

The shooting occurred March 1 at a home in the 2100 block of Stafford Street in Gretna, according to Detective Shayne LeRouge with the Gretna Police Department, who testified during a hearing in the case in March.

Authorities received a 911 call reporting that a man had been shot about 5:36 p.m. They arrived to find Carter suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest, LeRouge said. He was taken to University Medical Center but did not survive
