A man died after being found shot multiple times Sunday evening near a convenience store in Kansas City’s Washington Wheatley neighborhood, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded about 7:15 p.m. after a witness called reporting a shooting in the area of East 18th Street and Prospect Avenue, said Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department..

The witness met arriving officers and directed them to the area of 18th and Benton Boulevard, saying he had heard multiple gunshots near there, Gonzalez said.

Officers found the unresponsive victim lying in a grassy area near the Shell Xpress Mart. The victim had multiple gunshot wounds, Gonzalez said. Emergency medical workers pronounced the man dead.

Several witnesses remained in the area following the shooting and helped police
