MT. VERNON, Ill. – Authorities have announced charges in a weekend shooting in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, that claimed the lives of two people.

The shooting happened around 12:49 a.m. Sunday in the 600 block of South 15th Street.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire, along with Litton Ambulance and the Mt. Vernon Fire Department.

Emergency responders arrived to find seven people suffering from gunshot wounds and brought them all to local hospitals. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the hospital: Zomarrius Williams, 20, and Demonta Woodward, 26.

Jerria J. Smith, 22, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
