Sydney Sweeney is facing criticism for her recent advertisement with American Eagle. The campaign, titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," has sparked a heated debate on social media. Some users have labeled the ad as "tone-deaf" and accused it of having racial undertones, while others have defended it as a clever marketing strategy.

In the promotional video shared on American Eagle's Instagram, Sweeney, 27, walks toward a billboard featuring the tagline "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes." She then crosses out "Genes" and replaces it with "Jeans" before walking away. Critics have pointed out that the phrase "great genes" has historically been associated with celebrating whiteness and attractiveness.

One Instagram user commented, "Entirely tone-deaf. This is what happens when you have no people of color in a room." Another user added, "This ad campaign got so caught up in this ‘clever’ play on words that the people in the room missed what was so blatantly obvious to anyone not White." Some comments even went as far as to label the ad as "Nazi propaganda."

However, there are many who have come to Sweeney's defense. Supporters argue that the ad is simply a lighthearted promotion for jeans. One user stated, "It doesn’t hurt ANYONE. That’s the point. It’s literally an advertisement for jeans. Not for nazism." Another added, "Woke advertising is dead. Sydney Sweeney killed it."

The ad has gained significant attention, with Sweeney appearing on various 3D billboards across the United States, including the Sphere in Las Vegas. The campaign also features a Snapchat lens where Sweeney interacts with users, along with AI-enabled technology for customers to virtually try on the jeans.

Additionally, Sweeney's "Sydney Jean," which features an embroidered butterfly symbolizing domestic violence awareness, will donate 100 percent of net proceeds to Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit that offers free mental health support and crisis intervention.

Representatives for Sweeney and American Eagle have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the backlash.
