Chicago Cubs legend and Spokane native Ryne Sandberg has died after battling prostate cancer.

He was 65 years old.

Sandberg was a ten-time all-star and nine-time Golden Glove winner. He earned seven Silver Slugger trophies and won the 1984 National League Most Valuable Player Award.

Sandberg was a three-sport athlete (baseball, football and basketball) at North Central High School and graduated in 1978. The school's baseball field is dedicated in his name. Sandberg originally signed a letter of intent to play football at Washington State University, but chose baseball over football when the Phillies drafted him out of high school.
