MACON, Ga. — Union Pacific Railroad announced that they've reached a deal to purchase the much smaller Norfolk Southern Railroad , which the company says will "transform the U.S. supply chain" and "unleash the industrial strength of American manufacturing."

But locally, the deal could impact Brosnan Yard , which sees thousands of trains slide into the terminal and is run by Norfolk Southern. The sprawling complex covers a 960-acre footprint near downtown Macon.

According to a press release , the merger between Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific would create America's "first transcontinental railroad," connecting the East and West Coasts by rail.
