Southwest Airlines has announced a major change to its long-standing policy, giving customers the option to select their seat when booking a flight.

The new policy will begin on Jan. 27, 2026, according to the airline’s statement .

Customers will be able to choose from various fare bundles, some of which will allow them to select a seat during the booking process. The airline will offer different seat types, including extra legroom, preferred and standard.

Passengers will also have the option to purchase seat upgrades.
