ROCK SPRINGS — Pieces of glass, shards of bowls and jugs, tools — bit by bit history reveals itself as archaeologists work to excavate old Chinatown and uncover its history with the goal of designating it as a National Historic Landmark in the field of a park by Washington School in Rock Springs.

This area will also be the future site of the Requiem sculpture, facing Bridger Avenue, in recognition of the Chinese Massacre of 1885.

The dig is led by Dudley Gardner. Gardner, a retired professor of history and political science at Western Wyoming Community College, is also the director of the Western Anthropological and Archaeological Research Institute. He and his team are looking for undisturbed evidence of the town’s past, especially after the massacre, which resulted in the burning down
