A tsunami advisory for the West Coast including Northern Calfornia has been upgraded to a tsunami warning, following an 8.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off Russia's Kamchatka region on Tuesday, July 29, according to the National Weather Service.
The earthquake was recorded at 4:24 p.m. PT, about 84 miles east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The agency said the quake was shallow, at a depth of about 12 miles.
Tsunami warnings or advisories covered nearly the entire West Coast, including California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. According to the National Weather Service, a tsunami advisory is the second-highest alert level—less severe than a tsunami warning, which signals an imminent or occurring tsunami.
