SINGAPORE, — A Georgia Bulldog captured a world title Wednesday morning at the global championships in Singapore.

Luca Urlando, a graduate swimmer at UGA, won gold in the men's 200m butterfly at the World Aquatics Championships , a biennial event that's generally considered the most significant showcase in the sport after the Olympics.

For the 23-year-old, who competed at the Paris Olympics last year and finished 17th in 200m butterfly, the gold Wednesday is his first at this kind of international level.

He finished the swim with a personal best time of 1:51.87, a time that would have gotten him on the medal stand last summer in Paris.

According to a UGA release, it made him only the second American to record a time faster than 1:52, joining Michael Phelps.
