COLUMBUS, Ohio — A new rule from the Federal Communications Commission hopes to make responding to people reaching out for mental health support more accurate.

Based on the policy change, if you text the National Suicide Hotline at 988 moving forward, they'll connect you to help using "georouting" connected to the location of the phone you used to contact them.

According to a press released from the organization, text messages sent to 988 up until now were being routed using area codes.

The FCC came out with a similar rule last fall for phone calls made to the hotline.

In statement, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said these changes will connect millions of people to help faster.
