Mesa police have arrested 19-year-old Arnold Barney in connection with the death of his infant child, who was bruised and had internal injuries, authorities said.

Barney was booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse.

Police officers responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. July 28 after receiving a report about an infant not breathing at an apartment complex at 1033 South Longmore.

They found an infant in “respiratory distress,” according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
