(NewsNation) — Anytime the word "epidemic" is used, something's on the radar that grabs the attention of the country's health leaders.

That latest eye-catching problem? Synthetic opioids, better known as 7-OH.

A compound extracted from the kratom plant, 7-OH is used in gummies, drinkable shots and tablets that can be purchased in convenience stores. Some researchers have dubbed it "legal morphine," and its popularity has risen over the past few years.

The Food and Drug Administration says it is cracking down on 7-OH as the Trump administration not only tackles illegal vaping products but also unveils a new health tracking system.

"We found out talking to the scientists that it binds tightly to the opioid receptor," said Dr. Marty Makary, FDA commissioner.
