PEACHLAND, B.C. — Evacuations are in progress for approximately 400 properties due to a rapidly spreading wildfire between Peachland and West Kelowna. Central Okanagan Emergency Operations has advised residents in the area east of Trepanier Bench Road, south of Highway 97C, and north of Highway 97 to prepare for an extended absence from their homes.
The British Columbia government has stated that tactical evacuations are implemented when there is an immediate threat to public safety. If the situation worsens, local governments and First Nations may declare a strategic evacuation.
The wildfire has led to the closure of Highway 97 between Peachland and West Kelowna. Additionally, Highway 97C is closed from West Kelowna to 22 kilometers southeast of Merritt.
The fire, known as the Drought Hill fire, is located about two kilometers north of Peachland. Currently, 18 firefighters are on the scene, supported by three helicopters and other aircraft. Municipal firefighters from various departments are also assisting in the effort.
The BC Wildfire Service is utilizing Okanagan Lake to source water for firefighting efforts. They have requested that individuals on the lake provide space for the aircraft involved in the operation. Central Okanagan Emergency Operations has indicated that evacuation alerts will be issued soon.
