SEATTLE — Retired U.S. Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey told KING 5 President Donald Trump is serious about seeking a third term — and that recent Supreme Court decisions may be emboldening him.

“He's not even joking when he says, ‘I'm considering a third term in office,’” McCaffrey said during a recent interview.

Trump told NBC News in a March phone interview from Mar-a-Lago that there are “methods” to continue leading the country beyond a second term. “There are methods which you could do it,” he said.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1951 after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four consecutive terms, states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
