Wild horses in Alberta try to escape grizzly bear.

Last month we featured trail-cam footage showing wild horses trying to outrun a grizzly bear in Alberta, Canada, in what appeared to have been a successful hunt of a foal by the bear.

On Tuesday, one month later, a similar scenario played out. But it was too early to determine if another foal had been lost.

The accompanying footage, captured by trail cameras maintained by the Help Alberta Wildies Society, shows horses running for their lives through the forest after dawn.

The foal, trying to keep up, is pictured in the lower left of the frame at 20 seconds. After the horses exit the frame, the grizzly bear appears, also at the lower left, at 25 seconds. (Click here if video player does not appear below.)

HAWS staff is shown collecting a trail-cam’s photo card at 2:20 p.m.

On Wednesday, HAWS stated via Facebook: “This [footage] was on the cards we just picked up yesterday. Major is in the lead from a chase that occurred just hours before we arrived. The Griz is after that new foal and we don't know if it made it.”

Grizzly bear predation is a brutal reality for wild horses on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. In spring snd summer, bears chase herds in the hope of catching a foal or fallen adult.

HAWS has featured several clips showing bear chases that counter an old argument by Alberta that its wild horses have no natural predators.

In reference to the trail-cam footage, HAWS stated: “It makes you wonder just how many times this happens that we never see?”
