KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Royals have traded backup catcher Freddy Fermin ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.
According to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan , the Royals traded Fermin to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitcher Ryan Bergert.
The deal was made prior to Thursday’s 5 p.m. CT trade deadline.
Bergert provides a Royals team with several pitchers on the injured list an arm that could slot into the rotation this season. The 25-year-old rookie has a 1-0 record and 2.78 ERA in 11 games this season with the Padres. Seven of those appearances are as a starting pitcher.
Fermin, a 30-year-old from Venezuela, was in his fourth season with the Royals and was a valuable contributor defensively for Kansas City. Thanks to Fermin and catcher Salvador Pere
