A young mother’s birthday celebration turned tragic Wednesday after her 5-month-old son was killed by a dog in a relative’s Volusia County home, police said.

The baby — identified only by his first name, Carter — had been left with relatives in Ormond Beach while his parents went out to to dinner to celebrate his mother’s 21st birthday, according to Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

The sheriff’s office received a 911 call just before 10 p.m. Wednesday saying Carter was found injured in a bedroom with a 130-pound dog, a Great Dane and husky mix, next to him.

The infant’s parents arrived back at the home during the 911 call and quickly rushed their son to a hospital, where he later died, Chitwood said .

“A young mother will remember on her birthday that her child is dead…,” Chitwood said
