ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The City of Abbotsford has denied a permit for a concert by American Christian musician Sean Feucht, citing concerns over potential protests. The concert was scheduled for August 24 at Mill Lake Park.

In a statement, the city expressed that the decision was made due to the likelihood of significant protests and counter-protests surrounding the event. The city stated, "Given the recent publicity surrounding the proposed event, the city believes that the event could potentially attract significant numbers of protesters and counter-protesters in addition to attendees."

Abbotsford officials noted that these factors made it challenging to ensure community safety. They concluded that no permit conditions could sufficiently address the potential risks to the public.

B.C. Conservative legislator Heather Maahs, who represents Chilliwack North, criticized the decision on social media platform X. She stated that the cancellation "undermines the principles of an open, democratic society" and raised "serious concerns" about freedom of expression, religion, and peaceful assembly.

Feucht, who ran unsuccessfully as a Republican candidate for Congress in 2020, has faced criticism for his views on the LGBTQ+ community and abortion. Last week, six of his concerts in Central and Eastern Canada were also canceled.

In response to the cancellation, Feucht expressed his disappointment on X, saying, "You can no longer call Abbotsford the ‘Bible Belt’ of B.C. when they cancel outdoor worship to Jesus."

Feucht is scheduled to perform in West Kelowna on August 23. The city is currently reviewing safety and security plans for that event, citing "increased concerns" about the concert.
