AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas House will hold a public hearing Friday on controversial congressional redistricting maps that would dramatically reshape three Houston-area districts after the Department of Justice flagged some of the old districts as "racially gerrymandered."

The Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting, chaired by Rep. Cody Vasut, will meet at 10 a.m. Friday in the Capitol to hear public testimony.

The hearing comes amid mounting controversy over the rare mid-decade redistricting effort, which would redraw congressional boundaries just five years after the last round of map-drawing in 2021. Critics argue the move is politically motivated and threatens minority representation in Houston's core districts.
