The open seat for District 2 wasn’t supposed to show up on the ballot so soon after the 2024 election. But when Tammy Morales stepped down from her City Council seat in January, the South Seattle district faced a wide-open primary to replace her.

District 2 stretches from Yesler Terrace to Rainier Beach, with a population of around 108,000, the city estimates. Rich in diversity, the district is confronting tough public and traffic safety issues. While this year’s candidates generally share a similarly progressive outlook, they each bring a unique backstory to the race.
