The Maryland Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned the reckless endangerment conviction of a Baltimore police officer who allowed an assault suspect to kick his victim in the head while he was lying unresponsive on the sidewalk.
In a 6-1 opinion filed July 30, Justice Brynja Booth wrote that prosecutors failed to prove former officer Christopher Nguyen had a duty to protect the victim, and that there was no “special relationship” between the officer and the victim.
Nguyen was convicted in 2022 after a bench trial in Baltimore City Circuit Court . Circuit Judge Kendra Ausby originally sentenced him to a year in jail with all but 60 days suspended, plus a year and a half of probation. She also ordered him to complete implicit bias and cultural sensitivity training, according to Th
