BUFFALO, N.Y. — A familiar fixture in American physical education is making a comeback. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday to reinstate the Presidential Fitness Test, a national fitness assessment program that was once a rite of passage for generations of students.
Originally introduced in 1956, the test was a hallmark of gym classes across the country for decades before it was discontinued in 2013. Its revival marks a renewed focus on youth health and physical activity.
The initiative will now fall under the direction of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been vocal about the growing concerns surrounding childhood obesity in the United States. In a statement, Kennedy called the test “a proven tool to engage students in lifelong habi
