TEXAS — Another self-driving 18-wheeler, Volvo’s VNL autonomous truck, equipped with Aurora Driver self-driving technology, is now being tested on Texas roads.
“We didn’t wake up one day and say, hey, let’s take a risk and put a truck on the road. Years in the development of the vehicle itself took years to develop, the Aurora driver (took) years to develop,” Volvo’s Safety Compliance Officer Mike Hammond said.
Since 2024, Volvo and Aurora have formed a partnership in hopes of deploying more than 20 self-driving trucks across Texas by the end of the year.
While the Aurora self-driving system is being developed, a safety driver is present.
The safety driver helps keep the roads safe while the software learns to use lidar and radar.
