An independent watchdog agency has opened an investigation into Jack Smith, the former special counsel who investigated then-candidate Donald Trump before his reelection to a second term.

The Office of Special Counsel, which is responsible for enforcing a law against partisan political activity by federal employees, on Saturday confirmed the investigation to The Associated Press.

The backstory:

Smith was named a special counsel to investigate Trump by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Smith prosecuted federal cases against Trump but dropped the cases after Trump’s reelection and resigned his post .
