The Fantastic Four: First Steps easily held on to first place at the box office this weekend, but unfortunately, its weekend haul fell a sharp 66% to $40 million, much lower than anticipated by box office analysts. This was unexpected in part because the film has good word of mouth, decent reviews, and no new competition. It also dropped steeply internationally, so its global total gross is only at $368 million after two weekends of release. The film will do better in the end than a couple other recent Marvel releases - Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* - but this is not a good sign for superhero films.

In second place was The Bad Guys 2 with a $22.8 million domestic take. The animated sequel performed very similarly to the first installment.
