MOORHEAD — The Trump Administration’s preference of sugar cane over high-fructose corn syrup as a sweetener has left a bitter taste for corn producers, but it could provide a sweet opportunity for sugar beet farmers and refiners.
So what impacts could the White House’s sugar cravings have on the two major industries in North Dakota and Minnesota? An expert says there is a lot of uncertainty.
“That’s the word of the day: uncertainty on how that plays out in practice,” said Sandro Steinbach, a professor and director for agricultural policy and trade studies at North Dakota State University. “Currently, there’s no federal regulation in place that would require any producer to do anything. Anything is voluntary right now.”
