Matt Kurzyniec saw the original “Beetlejuice” movie from 1988 when he was young — sort of.

“I’ll be honest; I might have been a little too scared to watch the full thing,” the Livonia-born actor says now. “I was a bit of a chicken.”

Ironically, “Beetlejuice” has helped Kurzyniec’s theater career roost.

The 32-year-old has been on the road with the touring company of the stage musical for the past year, after being part of a cast of the show for Norwegian Cruise Line. (This week’s engagement at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre will mark his first time performing there.) A part of the ensemble, he understudies several roles, including the title character, and Kurzyniec gets plenty of opportunity to come off the bench.
