Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking unprecedented steps to confront a mass walkout by state House Democrats, threatening to expel them from office if they do not return to Austin by Monday afternoon. The bold ultimatum follows the flight of over 50 Democratic lawmakers to Illinois, aimed at denying the House a quorum and stalling a controversial Republican-led redistricting effort.

In a sharply worded letter, Abbott lambasted the legislators for what he called “premeditated truancy,” accusing them of abandoning their constitutional duties and jeopardizing legislative proceedings that impact all Texans.

“Real Texans do not run from a fight,” Abbott wrote. “This truancy ends now.”
