A portion of Route 1&9 in Newark has reopened following a tractor-trailer crash on the highway early on the morning of Aug. 4, authorities said.

The tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike at milepost 107.3 when the driver lost control around 4:02 a.m., according to State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron. The vehicle veered off the roadway to the right, struck a guardrail and traveled down an embankment.

Piles of metal could be seen spilled nearby from the tractor-trailer.

The right shoulder of the highway remained closed as of 8:45 a.m., but all northbound lanes had reopened, said Steve Schapiro, spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
