Despite NYC’s notoriously garbage-strewn sidewalks and signature trash-scented air, it turns out other cities have it worse–way worse. A new ranking of America’s dirtiest cities is out and, in a surprising twist, NYC didn’t even come close to snagging the top spot.

According to a new study from LawnStarter, New York City is not the dirtiest city in America. In fact, it didn’t even make the top 10…or 20. Claiming the title of the dirtiest city in the United States is actually San Bernardino, California –for the second year in a row. San Bernardino ranked with an overall score of 55.34.

To uncover America’s dirtiest cities, LawnStarter first determined the most relevant metrics, assigned a weight to each based on its importance, and then grouped those metrics into 4 categories:
