The Naked Gun did $17 million this weekend, which Deadline put a very positive spin on (to the point where it almost feels sponsored) — claiming that’s excellent for a straight-up comedy, existing IP that appeals to an older audience, and a movie starring older actors — but which surely will be a little bit of a bummer given how huge the promotional push was. If it can hang on next weekend against Freakier Friday and Weapons , then maybe it’ll look rosier? But I was a bit surprised to see that number so low; then again, I don’t deal with box-office projections for a living. I will say that my teens did not care if the stars were older, and had a blast seeing it on Friday night. I think I’m going tonight.
