AUSTIN, Texas (KBTX) - Late Sunday night, Governor Greg Abbott released a statement condemning Texas House Democrats for ‘abandoning’ the state to prevent a legislative quorum.
There are 150 members in the Texas House, and at least 100 need to be present for a quorum. According to the House Democratic Caucus spokesperson, Josh Nisenson at least 51 Democrat lawmakers left the state.
In the statement, Gov. Abbott said the absences were premeditated for an illegitimate purpose and claims Democrats hatched a deliberate plan not to show up for work with the intention to not perform their duties. Therefore, hindering the chamber’s business.
