(NEXSTAR) – In news that should lift the spirits of cookie monsters everywhere (and at a time when they surely might need it), cookie purveyors across the country are offering deals or freebies in honor of National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day on Monday.

The chocolate chip cookie dates back to at least 1938, according most accounts. The treat was popularized by Ruth Graves Wakefield, who developed her recipe as an alternative to the butterscotch or pecan cookies she served at her Toll House Inn in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Today, however, chocolate chip cookies are offered far and wide — and sometimes even for free on National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day.
