The Florida Highway Patrol will be playing a bigger role in immigration enforcement with the addition of FHP's Immigration Enforcement Division.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the new initiative last week, saying the new immigration unit will be part of FHP's Bureau of Criminal Investigations & Intelligence.

"To specialize in immigration enforcement, This team of mission dedicated troopers will work in close contact with local state and federal law enforcement partners to identify locate in apprehend criminal aliens across the state," DeSantis said.

Almost all FHP troopers in the state, some 1,800, have completed training to perform the duties of federal immigration officers, and thousands have been arrested by FHP since they started partnering with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
