Marion County residents can now haul any old mattress to their local St. Vincent de Paul store to have it recycled for free.
It’s a part of the Oregon Mattress Stewardship Program , created under a new state law that took effect in January. The law aims to reduce the amount of mattresses going into landfills and prevent illegal dumping.
A new fee on mattress purchases pays for the program. Retailers will charge customers a $22.50 fee for each new mattress purchased.
Mattress recyclers charged anywhere from $5 to $15 before the new law, and only accepted them at special locations like waste management sites.
Now, thanks to the program, mattress recycling is more accessible and free.
