An Ohio couple are proud parents to a baby boy who was delivered last week and developed from an embryo in frozen storage for 11,148 days, believed to be the longest storage time before a successful birth, CBS News reported.
After years of battling fertility issues, Linda and Tim Pierce took part in what’s known as embryo adoption, using embryos that were donated in 1994 in hopes of starting a family.
Only about 2% of U.S. births are from in vitro fertilization, according to CBS News, and an even smaller number of those come from donated embryos.
It was nearly 31 years ago when the donor, 62-year-old Linda Archerd turned to IVF, right around the time that the science of freezing and thawing embryos was improving and providing another option for people struggling with fertility.
